Don’t Leave Your Computer Exposed. You Need Anti Spyware (part 1)

In this two part series of blog postings you will find out why you need Anti Spyware

I get a lot of questions about how harmful it really can be to have spyware on your computer. Think of it this way… What do you use your computer for?

  • emailing?
  • shopping?
  • banking?
  • storing pictures?
  • keeping information organized?

All of these things can be compromised by spyware. A good spyware application can keep track of all the keystrokes you make and send them to a central server while you sleep. That means that it knows all of the websites you go to and all of your usernames and passwords. How would you feel if someone you knew had all that information not to mention someone you don’t know who only wants to use that information to exploit it? To prevent all these intrusions into your private life, you should make it a point to install an anti spyware software program onto your computer. The anti spyware program will alert you if somebody is trying to access your computer or if someone is trying to monitor the activities of your computer.

But Isn’t Spyware Illegal?

Surprisingly…. not really. Technically spyware was simply used as a way to help advertisers get their message across to people. Little did the lawmakers know how the code could be used to put peoples information in real danger. There really is no legal recourse for a spyware infection.

Other Important Steps to Eliminate Spyware

Having a quality anti spyware software on your computer is the best way to keep your computer safe but there are other things you can do as well. Firstly make sure the applications you install are not infected with spyware by reading the license information before installing it.

Pop up blockers are also quite effective in keeping spyware at bay. Yahoo!, Google, and MSN all offer great toolbars with pop up blockers. Windows users should be able to download the latest in security directly from their Internet Explorer browser. You can contact Microsoft for more details or information on anti spyware software or any other computer related issues that you need help with, or do the research on your own.

In this two part series we discuss choosing the right anti spyware software

Choosing the right anti spyware software is an important step in keeping your computer safe and your information secure. There are lots of choices and many of them are quite good. Just to name a few (but the choices are by no means limited to this list):

  • PCTOOLS
  • Spyware Be Gone
  • Trend Micro Anti-Spyware
  • Avast!
  • CounterSpy
  • Spy Sweeper

How Do You Use Anti Spyware Software?

The most important thing about using anti spyware software is to keep it updated. Most if not all of the ones we recommend do this for you automatically but you need to make sure you always have the latest versions. Why you ask? Because Anti Spyware software only reacts to known threats meaning that it is always a few steps behind the spyware makers. In order to keep that lag time to a minimum have the application update itself regularly or go to the manufacturers website and download updates yourself.

Understanding the routes of infection here is important, particularly in regards to spyware, which is different than most other types of viruses in that it does not directly spread in the manner of other viruses. But rather it works by getting onto a computer system through deception of the user or through exploitation of software vulnerabilities.

Keep in mind, as we’ve said before, that most spyware comes from installing software you download from the internet. Many times when you want to download a “trial” of some shareware, it could be loaded with spyware. Some spyware is pretty harmless but annoying, while others are serious security risks.

In Step 2 we discuss other important steps in choosing Anti Spyware Software.
