The most recent release of Sony’s gaming portables is the PSP Go, disclosed in Q4 of 2009 at the E3 gaming show.  The PSP Go features are significantly different to older machines in the range, and unite to supply a fashionable and practical differentiation to the regular series.

The first, and likely most talked about, of the PSP Go features to stray from classic models is the absence of a UMD drive. Previous models have used this media avenue for both gaming and movies, but the PSP Go gets rid of it completely. In its place, Sony want all software on the PSP Go to be downloaded onto the 16 GB of internal memory. This bold move will be allowed by the PS store, which is building a vast catalogue of games and films to be supplied with the PSP Go features.

The formerly mentioned 16 GB of memory is flash based, and can be increased to 32 GB with a memory stick micro. This PSP Go feature offers a huge base of memory so players will not be stumped for space. The screen has been a touch reduced in size since the PSP 3000, but offers a much sharper display at 480×272 pixels. The screen shelf is pressed upwards to reveal the buttons and directional pad, which also includes an analogue stick as before.

The PSP Go retains all the fundamental features of its progenitor, including wi-fi functioning and access to the PS store both on its own or via a PS3. Sony are busying themselves to make all prior UMDs available in the store, and game players can also access ‘Minis’, a new range of cheaper games from classic ranges such as Megaman and Tetris.

So that’s a brief intro to the PSP Go features. The machine retains the classic feel and specs of the progenitor, whilst presenting a fresh new design and inventive media capabilities. Sony have said that totally downloading games is the plan for all computer games in the future, and so the PSP Go is leading the way for a fresh step in gaming history.
